Having grown up on the prairies of Saskatchewan, and moving to the Foothills of Alberta, it was inevitable that the Rocky Mountains would capture my creative eye with the majestic beauty of their Eastern Slopes. I see the symbolic nature of these spaces. There is an abundance of lessons to learn from the wisdom of the wild.
In the spirit of reconciliation, I acknowledge that I live, work, and play on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta. Much gratitude.

My husband and I took a trip to nearby Waterton National Park this past Autumn—a stunning area devastated by an extreme wildfire in the summer of 2017. Thankfully the town was saved through the hard work of firefighters and residents. Unfortunately, 80% of the hiking network and many other surrounding businesses/structures/infrastructure were affected. This was our first trip back to the area since the fire. The regrowth and rejuvenation was breathtaking.
I have always been fascinated by the death and rebirth cycle of the wild spaces. The dead feeds the birth of the new vegetation and is a necessary part of the life cycle. We grow through changes and the death of parts of ourselves evolving each moment. Knowing the beauty of growth, although sometimes painful in its process, serves as a signal to trust the cycle.

Rocks are thought of as strong, sturdy, and stable. We often call upon a friend or loved one to be our "rock", but we can also be a rock for ourselves. This river symbolizes the path one must take - either as a descent in or out of the challenges one faces. Finding your rock in the river is grounding and provides courage while facing these challenges. "Stand Upon Me" calls us to pause and ask for guidance. Listen and learn from the wisdom of the wild spaces.
Where the river flows

The movement of our mountain water can trickle or rush, but the flow carries on in the same direction. We can parallel this forward flow to our own lives, gentle or tumultuous at times, as we pass through life. The only way through uneasy times is “through” and follow your path as the river follows its own.
“Where the River Flows” is a reminder to be caretakers of our water sources as this water tends to you and me and the generations to come.

Something's Brewing was inspired by a stunning landscape near Longview, Alberta. I was attracted to the way the snow, like a fine lace, drapes itself over the rock-hard mountain surface - almost softening it like the rolling hills below. The sky always plays a part in the beauty of the land, I particularly like the presence of clouds forming above. They always add to the mood while enjoying those amazing Rocky Mountains.

I incorporated many of her favorite wildflowers from the reference photo she supplied me. Waterton Lakes National Park is truly the most beautiful jewel in Southern Alberta. The traditional Blackfoot name for Waterton Lakes is Paahtómahksikimi (BUCK-toe-MOCK-sick-ih-mee) – meaning the inner sacred lake within the mountains. An incredible name for an incredible place.

Just off Cowboy Trail (Highway 22) Hartell, Alberta is home to a beautiful display of the foothills leading up to the Rocky Mountains. It's always been a favourite spot to enjoy the scenery when I make my way home south to Longview.

Many tourists to the Alberta Rocky Mountains miss seeing this magnificent scene of Morraine Lake. The turnoff is just before famous Lake Louise. I was fortunate to experience it on this misty magical day.

One of my favourite scenic routes is driving home to Longview on Coal Trail. This particular day was clear and sunny with the perfect amount of snow dotting the mountains’ peaks. I imagined living in that amazing location and what a marvelous feeling it must be to coming home it. Mind you I was on my way home, too!

While driving home to Longview on Coal Trail, this scene stopped me in my tracks. The dreamy colour of the landscape in contrast with the snow’s stark outlines on the mountains created a magnificent panorama. Every day of every hour the light and ambiance of the landscape, clouds, and mountains continue to change.

A big sky, massive mountains and hay bales – a true Alberta landscape. Having grown up in the city and with an artist’s eye, I always look at these massive round hay bales as an art form rather than in a rancher’s context. Add a backdrop of the magnificent Rocky Mountains and it becomes awe-inspiring. This scene was found along Highway 22 near the Bar-U Ranch, SW of Longview, Alberta.
